Craig Elevitch, the workshop organizer, opened the workshop with a talk about the importance of agroforestry in Pacific islands, and the background of workshop preparations.

Participants prepare themselves for the welcoming talk of a lifetime.

Sixty-six participants were registered for the workshop, along with 10 speakers.

The workshop was planned over the course of 2 years by Craig Elevitch, Permanent Agriculture Resources; J. B. Friday, UH CTAHR Forestry Extension; Bart Lawrence, State Resource Conservationist, Pacific Basin; Diane Ragone, National Tropical Botanical Garden; and Michael Robotham, NRCS Tropical Technology Specialist.

Kona was an ideal setting due to the customary mixed-agroforests of the Kona Coffee Belt, which provided numerous opportunities for field visits.
